3 Ways to Steam

Option 1 β€” Stainless Steel Steamer

  • Place a collapsible stainless steel steamer basket into a pot or frying pan deep enough to fit it.

  • Add enough water to reach just below the basket.

  • Arrange frozen dumplings in the basket using liners or veggies to prevent sticking.

  • Cover with a lid and steam for 10–12 minutes.

Option 2 β€” Digital Rice Cooker

  • Add water to the rice cooker and bring to a boil using the "Cook" or "Steam" button.

  • Place frozen dumplings on steam paper or a bed of cabbage leaves inside the steamer tray.

  • Close the lid and steam for 10 minutes.

Option 3 β€” Steam Rack & Plate

  • Place a small steam rack at the bottom of a frying pan.

  • Add water to the pan, staying below the level of the rack.

  • Place frozen dumplings on a heat-safe plate and set the plate on top of the rack.

  • Cover with a lid and steam for 10 minutes.

Origin

Xiao Long Bao originated in the Nanxiang suburb of Shanghai, China. Traditionally steamed in stacked bamboo baskets (笼子, lΓ³ng zi) that absorb excess moisture, these three modern methods adapt ancient culinary traditions to everyday appliances β€” making restaurant-quality soup dumplings accessible to home cooks everywhere.
