What's the Scoop?

Love soup dumplings but don't have a traditional bamboo steamer? Don't let that stop you! This guide shows you how to get that perfect, delicate steam using everyday kitchen tools you likely already own. Whether it's a stainless steel insert, your trusty rice cooker, or a simple rack in a frying pan, you can enjoy restaurant-quality xiao long bao right at home with zero fuss.

Ingredients (Serves 1–2)

Dumplings

  • 🥟
1 bag Synear Frozen Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao)

For Lining & Dipping

  • 🥬
Steaming paper or cabbage leaves (to prevent sticking)
  • 🍶
    Soy sauce & black vinegar
  • 🌶️
    Chili oil (optional)

3 Ways to Steam

Option 1 — Stainless Steel Steamer

  • Place a collapsible stainless steel steamer basket into a pot or frying pan deep enough to fit it.
  • Add enough water to reach just below the basket.
  • Arrange frozen dumplings in the basket using liners or veggies to prevent sticking.
  • Cover with a lid and steam for 10–12 minutes.

Option 2 — Digital Rice Cooker

  • Add water to the rice cooker and bring to a boil using the "Cook" or "Steam" button.
  • Place frozen dumplings on steam paper or a bed of cabbage leaves inside the steamer tray.
  • Close the lid and steam for 10 minutes.

Option 3 — Steam Rack & Plate

  • Place a small steam rack at the bottom of a frying pan.
  • Add water to the pan, staying below the level of the rack.
  • Place frozen dumplings on a heat-safe plate and set the plate on top of the rack.
  • Cover with a lid and steam for 10 minutes.
Origin

Xiao Long Bao originated in the Nanxiang suburb of Shanghai, China. Traditionally steamed in stacked bamboo baskets (笼子, lóng zi) that absorb excess moisture, these three modern methods adapt ancient culinary traditions to everyday appliances — making restaurant-quality soup dumplings accessible to home cooks everywhere.
